£2,500 travel bursary for architecture & design students
Shoreditch-based practice, LOM architecture and design, is inviting applications for its annual travel bursary, offering £2,500 to support student travel that enriches design thinking. [Deadline: Friday 30th May 2025]
The bursary was established in memory of Karla Roman, a talented architect and much-loved colleague, who tragically lost her life while cycling to work in February 2017. Karla’s career spanned the UK, Italy and her native Brazil. She believed deeply in travel as a means of enriching her architectural understanding – a legacy that the bursary seeks to continue by supporting future generations of designers.
The bursary is open to all UK and international students studying architecture, interior design, or a related subject in the built environment, whether full-or part-time, at undergraduate or postgraduate level. It offers the next generation the opportunity to apply for up to £2,500 towards travel that will broaden their educational experience. Awards will be made based on the creativity and strength of each applicant’s proposal, alongside consideration of financial need.
Past recipient Farid Abdulla shared,
“Experiencing a change of environment facilitated a cognitive shift and a clarity of thought, particularly regarding my career as a designer and urbanist. I discovered layers of imagination that I will continue to nurture, as well as an appreciation for where best to place myself when I finish my studies. The bursary allowed me to have a beautiful experience that has forever changed me.”
LOM Director, Richard Hutchinson, added,
“Karla was an extraordinarily talented colleague who quickly became a vital part of our team, set for a very bright future. Her loss was felt deeply by us all. Establishing this bursary in 2018 in Karla’s name was a way to honour her memory and to help expand the horizons of other aspiring designers.”
Another past bursary winner, Eleanor Hyde, said,
“The opportunity to travel to a country with a very different culture from the UK has proved invaluable to my thinking as an architect. It has informed my design approach, broadened my knowledge, and will continue to shape my perspective into the future.”
In recent years, recipients have used the bursary to pursue inspiring experiences: Jemima, from London Metropolitan University, spent three months in South-East Asia, focusing on sustainable development and learning traditional bamboo construction techniques – while Isaac from Oxford Brookes University, travelled through Sweden to deepen his understanding of contemporary timber construction methods while exploring a variety of landscapes.
Applications for the 2025 bursary are now open. We would love to hear from students ideally planning to travel between June and November 2025.
